Meet the U.S. Attorney Steven D. Weinhoeft - US Attorney STEVEN D. WEINHOEFT

United States Attorney Southern District of Illinois

Steven D. Weinhoeft is a career state and federal prosecutor with more than 23 years of experience as a litigator. He was judicially appointed to serve as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, effective July 23, 2018.

He has been a member of the US Department of Justice since February 19, 2008. Prior to becoming United States Attorney, Mr. Weinhoeft served as the First Assistant United States Attorney and Chief of the Criminal Division. His federal practice has focused on prosecuting public corruption cases, white collar crimes, and multi-district and transnational drug trafficking conspiracies as part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) program. He has also maintained collateral duties related to crisis management, national security, and cyber-crimes.

Prior to joining the Department of Justice, Mr. Weinhoeft served as the First Assistant State’s Attorney in Sangamon County (Springfield) Illinois. He was a state prosecutor for more than 11 years, with significant trial experience in a wide variety of offenses, including: first degree murder, aggravated criminal sexual assault, armed robbery, DUI reckless homicide, and many others. His state practice focused on violent crime and included experience with expert witnesses in multiple forensic disciplines.

He is admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois, United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois, The US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and the Illinois Supreme Court.
