Meet the U.S. Attorney Acting USA Sean R Berry

Sean R. Berry serves as the Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa. He has been an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in the Northern District of Iowa since 1999, where he has also served as First Assistant United States Attorney and Criminal Chief. Mr. Berry has extensive experience in prosecuting complex white-collar crime and child exploitation cases. Mr. Berry was awarded the Director’s Award for Superior Performance following the child exploitation conviction of and 100-year sentence for James Bentley.

Prior to 1999, Mr. Berry served for ten years as an AUSA in Los Angeles, California, where he was Chief of the Major Frauds Section. Mr. Berry prosecuted numerous complex cases involving securities fraud, insider-trading, and public corruption. Mr. Berry was awarded the Director’s Award for Superior Performance following the three-month trial of a $100 million bank and securities fraud arising from financial fraud at Financial News Network and United Press International.

Prior to joining the Department of Justice, Mr. Berry spent two years as a civil litigator with Musick, Peeler & Garrett in Los Angeles. He graduated in 1987 from the Northwestern University Law School. He received his undergraduate degree in 1982 from the University of Notre Dame. Mr. Berry has been a Certified Public Accountant.

Mr. Berry also serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Iowa College of Law where he teaches Federal Criminal Practice. Mr. Berry frequently serves as an instructor for the Department of Justice both here and abroad. He regularly teaches trial advocacy classes at the National Advocacy Center in Columbia, South Carolina. He has lectured in Malaysia and Indonesia on investigating and prosecuting computer crimes. He has provided training to judges and prosecutors in Macedonia on corporate criminal liability topics. He has presented investigation and prosecution training in Bangladesh for local prosecutors and law enforcement officers.
