Meet the U.S. Attorney Dennis R. Holmes Acting U.S. Attorney
Dennis R. Holmes is the Acting United States Attorney for the District of South Dakota. On February 26, 2021, Mr. Holmes became the Acting U.S. Attorney under the Vacancies Reform Act, and this marks the third time he has held this position
Most recently, Mr. Holmes served as the First Assistant U.S. Attorney, and has also served as the District’s Criminal Chief since 2002. He correspondingly serves as the District’s Anti-Terrorism Advisory Council Coordinator, National Security Cyber Specialist, Crisis Management Coordinator, and Organized Crime Coordinator.
Mr. Holmes is a Custer, South Dakota, native. He received his B.S from Chadron State College in Nebraska, in 1976, and his J.D. from the University of South Dakota in 1979.
Prior to joining the US Attorney’s Office in 1988, Mr. Holmes worked for the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office. During his tenure there Mr. Holmes served as head of the Litigation Division, Deputy Attorney General, and Chief Deputy Attorney General.
Mr. Holmes is a previous recipient of the Director’s Award for Superior Performance by an AUSA. Other honors include the Outstanding Performance Award from the Environment Natural Resources Division; the Bronze Medal Award from the Environmental Protection Agency; National and regional OCDETF awards for outstanding achievement; and the Midwest HIDTA Prosecutor Award for outstanding drug interdiction efforts.
