Meet the U.S. Attorney Leif M. Johnson Acting U.S. Attorney Leif Johnson

Acting U.S. Attorney Leif M. Johnson is a career prosecutor who began with the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington in 1992. He received his law degree from the University of Montana in 1990 and later clerked for U.S. District Court Judge Jack D. Shanstrom in Billings, Montana. After a two-year clerkship, Mr. Johnson joined the Department of Justice Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) as a trial attorney in the Department of Justice Honors Program. He litigated water rights and land issues for the Indian Resources Section of the ENRD for several years and then returned to Montana in 1995 as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Montana. In the U.S. Attorney’s Office, he served as a line assistant in the Civil Division until 2006 when he was designated as Civil Chief. Mr. Johnson became Appellate Chief for the office in 2013, and First Assistant in 2016. Under the Vacancies Reform Act, Mr. Johnson now serves as the Acting U.S. Attorney until a successor is nominated by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. This is Mr. Johnson’s second designation as Acting U.S. Attorney.
