They eventually tied the knot in a private ceremony held in October 2017 in Vienna, Austria, actually on Peter’s 50th birthday, at which the guests were surprised when the couple revealed that they were going to exchange their wedding vows.

Peter Andreas Thiel was born on 11 October 1967 under the sign of Libra, in Frankfurt, then West Germany, to his father, Klaus Friedrich Thiel, and his mother, Susanne Thiel. The family moved to Cleveland, Ohio when Peter was an infant, and there his father worked as a chemical engineer. He is the elder brother of Patrick Michael Thiel.
Before they settled in Foster City, California in 1977, the family spent some time living in South Africa and Namibia, where Peter attended elementary schools. He went to Bowditch Middle School in Foster City, and matriculated from San Mateo High School in 1985. He then enrolled into Stanford University, from which he graduated with a BA degree in 1989. While in college, he founded “The Stanford Review” and served as its editor-in-chief. Afterwards, Peter furthered his education at the Stanford Law School, from which he obtained his J.D. degree in 1992.
Peter started his full-time career as a judicial clerk for Judge James Larry Edmondson at the US Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, after which he worked as a securities attorney at Sullivan & Cromwell.
After spending seven months there, Peter was hired as a derivatives trader at Credit Suisse, before working as a speechwriter for William Bennett, a former US Secretary of Education.

In 1996, Peter established his own company – Thiel Capital Management – an investment fund. Two years later, he co-founded the software company Confinity Inc. alongside Luke Nosek and Max Levchin, while they launched PayPal as a money transfer service at Confinity in 1999, along with Russel Simmons, Yu Pan, and Ken Howery. Peter served in the company as its CEO (Chief Executive Officer) until it was sold to eBay for $1.5 billion in 2002. At the time of its sale, he had a 3.7% stake which was worth over $55 million, which made him known as the ‘Don of the PayPal Mafia’.
Continued Success: Facebook and Other Private Business Ventures
Thereafter, Peter Theil invested $10 million to launch the global macro hedge fund Clarium Capital Management, which was followed by his investments in Facebook in August 2004, which he later sold for $1 billion in 2012. He also became a board member at Facebook. In 2004, he co-founded Palantir Technologies, a private data analysis company, in which he serves as the Chairman and currently holds shares worth over $20 billion. In the following year, Peter launched the venture capital company, Founders Fund, with Luke Nosek and Ken Howery. In 2010, he co-founded Valar Ventures and Mithril Capital Management, and more recently was also a partner at Y Combinator between 2015 and 2017.
Peter has now started investing in such private businesses as Stripe, Airbnb, and Vivint, among many others.
